Research

My theme/topic
I went with making a teen drama because I think some people can find it relatable.
This website says that teens can spend up to 20 hours a week watching TV so they're exposed to this kind of genre, when they see it and learn about the characters and what their situations are I think that they can relate and will be intrigued by it.

"10 Things I Hate About You" is a similar genre to mine and it's popular amongst teen girls. Although it was made in 1999 the issues in it are similar to mine, friendships get in the way when it comes to boys and even bullying where people look down on others thinking they're better. This film had a pretty good reception and I want my film to appeal to a similar audience. It has a great reception, grossing $53,500,000 worldwide and was given 7.2 stars out of 10 on IMDB.

I also want a target audience similar to the one of the 2004 film Mean Girls, again the same issues come up revolving friendship, betrayal, boys and secrets with the "burn book" concept. It's translated in a different way in my story but the situations the characters are in are similar which is why I want to aim my film at the same audience.

For the applying to the college deal, you have to email a member of college staff for an application pack then have an interview. All the details to apply for Ashton Sixth Form are here.

Because the family in my story move house, I researched how long it takes on average to move. It can take from as little as 6 weeks to 3 months for the offer to completion process to happen so I could set the whole summer camp in July/start of August and the move could happen throughout August so my character would enrol a little late due to the move.

The idea of the summer camp works because they happen at different times in summer and for different durations so it's possible for one to happen in July and finish in August and only last for a few weeks. It depends on the child's age how long they stay but can choose to go home if they feel like they want to.
This camp is ideal for my setting as kids from ages 7-17 can go and they last a week.
This website was reliable as it gave me a lot of information about the camp in terms of the ages that can go, their accommodation and the length of time you can go for. It shows the activities you can do and it painted a good picture of the camp.

Bullying plays a role in my story and I included it because it does still happen even in colleges and it can make the situation more believable for the audience. According to nobullying.com, 'Of those who said they’d been cyberbullied, 25 percent said it was through a social networking site, 21 percent through texting, 16 percent through email and 13 percent through instant messages.' This helps me because now more than ever, teenagers spend a lot of time on their phones and social network popularity is growing. Nobullying.com is reliable because it gave me the secondary research I needed and I think incorporating the bulling being over the phone makes it more realistic.

Cast
With John Baker's character, we don't see him in the film but we hear Holly mention him.
Jess Pitman as Holly
Luke Davies as Luke

Because Jess and Luke are already a couple they'll be more comfortable acting really close which is why I cast them.
Robyn Lacey as Chloe, Robyn fits the description as she's taller than Jess and has a more edgy personality so I think it would work.

Locations
As far as locations go I have quite a few options, because it's set in a classroom and I would want a few exterior shots of the college and for the interior I can film in college

I also want to show the house that the family have moved into so I could use my house for this.

Even for when I want to film the night scene I could do that anywhere even if it's on the street in front of my house but just not get it in the shot.

Timescale
Looking at this website. X
It tells me that the sun sets around 9/9:30pm in the evening at this time of year and because I want a scene to be shot when it's dark one evening, I need to know what time is best to shoot so that I won't be in darkness.

3 Act Structure
Act 1.
We get introduced to Holly as we see her getting ready in the morning with a voice over of her saying "new place... new people... new start". It then cuts to her walking up to the college gates, it's her 3rd "first day" so she's used to it and goes by herself.
She gets settled for the day with her timetable and a map of the building, she has form first and eventually finds her way there after bumping into people not properly looking where she's going. She comes in late and apologises and her tutor tells her to introduce herself because she's new which she does and then carries on to find a spare seat.
On her way to sit down she clocks a girl sat near the back, this forms the inciting incident. Holly catches her gaze and can't help but think she's seen her from somewhere. After realising who it is she quickly sits down with her back to this girl with a shocked expression.

Act 2.
After form ends, Holly quickly gets out and heads down the corridor but this girl catches her up and introduces herself as Chloe. Both know they've already met but don't mention it, Chloe asks to see her timetable and she realises they're in the same class and she offers to show Holly the way to the classroom and she accepts. They get there and Chloe gets a seat next to Holly and they talk as if they're been friends since the start of the year. At break a guy in the class called Luke introduces himself to Holly and they begin talking, Chloe sees them talking and breaks them up and sits next to Holly.
After the next few weeks Holly talks to Luke more and more and begins to like him a bit, Chloe pulls her aside and says she liked him first and she can't talk to him anymore. Holly still carries on and in fact goes on a few dates with Luke. Chloe finds out and firmly tells Holly to stop, it's her final warning. Or else. This is the beginning of the rising action as Holly now learns that Chloe has another side to her.
Holly is somewhat shuck up and she knows what "or else" means but she doesn't want to face it. Holly stops talking to Luke, in her attempt of making a resolution, but he likes her as well so obviously still talks to her but Chloe sees it as Holly ignoring what she said to her and it fuels a bit of tension between them and it's the start of a living nightmare for Holly. Chloe begins to embarrass Holly in class and spread rumours and leaving her in lessons as her and Luke are getting closer to each other.

Act 3.
One night when Holly is walking home when it's pretty dark and raining she sees someone from the corner of her eye following her, they catch her up and it turns out to be Chloe and she tells Holly that she told her to leave Luke alone but because she's not, she'll tell everyone, including Luke and her parents what happened over summer at camp and it's too late to stop now. This is the lowest eb and is the biggest thing to happen in the story, it adds to the narrative as we see this new side of Chloe and it shakes her up.
Holly carries on her journey home and goes straight to her room, without speaking to anyone and doesn't have her dinner that night, she's too scared for what will happen the next day.
She can't skip college because she has an assessment that she needs to be present for so she has no choice but to go in.
The next morning Holly drags herself out of bed with the least possible amount of enthusiasm, gets ready, grabs an apple for breakfast and heads to the bus stop. She gets to college and sits on her own in the class room, she makes eye contact with Chloe who's smirking at her from the back of the room. The day almost comes to an end and the teacher dismisses them, leaving the class to go to the staff room just like always. Holly thought she was worrying for nothing, Chloe didn't even say anything! Her thinking she's safe and nothing will happen adds to the climax and the audience take it as a plot twist. She walks to the door but before she does a hand shuts the door in front of her and it's Chloe, she looks up and Chloe begins to speak to the class. "Everyone, there's something I think you should know about Holly...." the screen then goes black and it's the end so the audience are left to guess for themselves.

Age: 16
Relationships: Daughter of John and Jessica Baker, only child.
Holly is a quiet girl who gets along with everyone and has a good relationship with her parents and always had, never causing any trouble. She did well in school and because she's an only child she's quite spoilt and often gets what she wants. 5'6 and is a slim build, wears plain but fashionable clothes and has a typical teenage girl sense of style inspired by the likes of celebrities like Alexa Chung.

He works as a sports coach full time and because of this he and his family move around a lot to coach different teams. He's a family man and never leaves them behind, he feels bad because he's made his family pick up and move so many times, he especially feels bad on Holly as she's never properly settled. They've moved 3 times so far and they hope this move to Manchester to coach a popular local team will be the last one for a while.

Treatment

My story is based around a typical teenage girl called Holly from Yorkshire, she listens to generic pop music that's in the charts, spends a lot of time on her phone and idolises celebrities. Her and her family recently moved to Manchester after her dad got a new job promotion to coach a football team in the local area. Holly was overjoyed on the inside but calm and cool on the outside when her mum and dad sat her down and said the two words she'd heard twice before... "We're moving!" Summer just gone was an interesting one but she wants to move on from it. Holly went to a summer camp and met new friends but events took place and which let to Holly having a lot of trust in one girl that she met and never thought she'd see again. Her move to Manchester meant she could meet new people and no one knew anything about her. Or so she thought.

She starts at a new college one month into the first term and on her first day she gets her new timetable and a map of the buildings. She bumps into people as she is a bit lost in the main building and eventually finds the room she's looking for. She stumbles into her first tutorial late and introduces herself to her tutor and form, she looks around the somewhat lifeless classroom with the white dull walls where the paint is peeling off and notices someone she thinks she recognises. She shrugs it off as she thinks it isn't possible that it could be the person she's thinking of as she's now so far from where she used to live.
After form, Holly dashes out but this person pulls Holly a side and introduces herself as Chloe and both are friendly towards each other, for now.
Turns out they're in the same class and Holly takes a liking to a guy in the class, it just so happens that the Chloe likes him too. A few weeks pass and after Chloe finds out Holly and him have gone out on a few dates, she isn't ecstatic about it.
There seems to be tension between these two characters and it's all because of this and she uses what happened over summer as more of a reason to dislike her. Chloe begins to threaten that she'll expose what happened unless she backs off of Luke.
But she doesn't.

Holly has made other friends but doesn't tell them much about how she knows Chloe. That stays between the two of them.
Chloe begins to make school life a bit of a nightmare for Holly, embarrassing her in class and making up petty rumours about her. As time passes, Holly and Luke become closer and this only agitates Chloe more and she decides enough is enough.
She speaks to Holly one on one after she follows her home and makes it clear that she's had enough and she's going to tell everyone her secret. But... will she actually do it?

Only 3 characters are mainly involved in my narrative. We have Holly who's your typical teen really, she's outgoing but reserved. It makes her classmates feel suspicious of her as she already knew Chloe but never told anyone how.
Then we get Chloe who on paper seems more interesting, she can be quite outspoken, her voice always has to be heard but she is a really good friend to those she's close to. Although you don't want to get on the wrong side of her which Holly quickly learns.
Finally the last character who plays a part in the narrative is Luke, he drives the plot forward with Holly and Chloe's relationship and he plays a role in how it deteriorates. He's a nice lad and gets along with everyone, Luke knows what he wants and seems to have a sense of humour about everything.

My story will appeal to my target audience of teenage girls because I think the situation in it is very realistic as it shows friendships and how they can turn into bullying and it really plays on the whole idea of being careful who you trust.

Unit 22 Assignment 1

A single camera production is a production that only uses one camera to create it, we use them because it can be beneficial if you're on a budget as you won't need as many crew members, you aren't spending loads on multiple cameras so you can buy one decent one. Also you can get a better performance out of your actors as when you just have one camera they know when it's on them they need to bring it. Comedy sitcom Outnumbered is an example of a single camera production.
Sometimes productions that come under the single camera heading aren't always shot with one camera. Certain scenes such as ones that involve a lot of action might use more than one camera, because the majority is filmed with one camera it's still considered a single camera production. These are different to multi camera productions because they use more than one camera for the whole production.

Single camera productions can come in different formats, them being a series, serial or a one off film in any genre whether it be horror, comedy or drama. "M*A*S*H" is an example of a TV series single camera production that was aired in the 80's. This clip  uses some jump cuts which are the easiest way to get from one shot to another. Scrubs is another example of a single camera production that's a comedy/drama sitcom.
All the formats are best suited for the single camera process because it makes the end product look better. For example the one off film, a filmmaker only has to manage one camera and they will get a better performance from their actor so the end product will be more impressive. The same thing goes for series and serial dramas etc, especially if it's a one time series that has 6 episodes it's easy to make and you can stick to your budget.

There are a few different narrative structures that single camera productions can follow. Either; Linear, where the narrative makes sense and starts at the beginning and runs through till the end. Non linear, where the narrative isn't straightforward and can start in the middle and end at the beginning. A filmmaker can also tell part of a story using flashbacks, this will show the audience the back story behind a character or an event so that they have more understanding of something.
For ending, stories can go one of two ways - open or closed. An open ending is where the audience is left guessing, it could be left on a cliff hanger. Whereas a closed ending is where we know the answer and we have a resolution.
Narratives follow a 3 act structure, it can be shown in a graph where you plot points that represent inciting incidents, obstacles, mid point, lowest eb, climax, twist,  and a resolution.

Filmmakers can also tell stories through technical codes - it's a way of telling a story without verbally saying it. It can be shown through use of the camera - i.e different shots, lighting, sound, editing and Mise en Scene. For example if you wanted to show a character who signifies strength, you could include tracks in and out on them and include tilts from the feet up so it makes them look bigger and more important. Lighting used could be low key with it focussed on a specific person in the shot so that they're the focal point.
The sound used can make the audience feel a certain way whilst seeing the character, if you wanted to build up tension you would use slow but dramatic music with a rhythm, like a heart beat which would be used along side a tilt. These together will show the audience that it's a person of authority or importance without verbally saying it.

I think that single camera productions are a good way of showing how good of a filmmaker you are. You can be more independent and because you're only working with one camera you can manage it better and I think you can get a better end product out of it.

Video script

Video commentary by Maddi, Jade and Matt.

For our focus groups we asked a group of people 12 questions and all said they got the gist of our advert and agreed the message of it was clear and straightforward. We asked them if they understood why we had used the tortoise in the advert, 2 said they did and the other said that they realised at the end when they heard the "slowly but surely", following from this all said that the chroma keying added humour to the advert and they enjoyed it.  Everyone also said the sound was clear and the music really suited the advert and because the song was recognisable it made it more engaging for the audience. Our aim was to make an advert that was upbeat and positive and from this focus group everyone said it gave them a feel good factor and inspired them to get involved with the campaign.

We didn't face that many challenges with the brief but one of the things we did find challenging was the fact that the brief was quite open, it was mostly an advantage because it give us creative freedom. We worked well with the brief because it was so open and it gave us a lot of flexibility with what we could do. We fulfilled the brief because we focussed on the positives of the campaign and not the negatives, (slowly but surely part) keeping it upbeat by using well known music and kept it interesting by using a tortoise. We also made the 5,000,000 young future campaign the centre point and it played a big part in the advert, the brief wanted us to promote this campaign and we feel like we did.
We could of made it serious or funny but barclays didn't want us to dwell at all. The disadvantages of having an open brief was that it made us spend longer coming up with an idea for the advert. We made changes due to unforeseen challenges such as having to film inside and not outside as we originally planned because it was raining.

We experienced some problems with the technical side to the advert such as, it took us a while to get the focus right on the close up of tommy because he was so small and the lighting in the room wasn't very good, we couldn't of used lights because there wasn't enough room and there wasn't enough plugs for them anyway. Generally working with tommy was a challenge because he wasn't very cooperative, the first time we shot the advert because he would hardly move but then when we re-shot it he was overly active and wouldn't keep still. He was also walking over all the lettuce so we had to keep putting it back in place when we were filming every shot.

The positive sides of the technical stuff was that when we re-shot the advert we used a better camera this helped us get more of a professional quality and the close ups were a lot more clear and not grainy. The setting was simple and effective because we didn't need any permission to film there and there wasn't any restrictions with regards to time. I think the song on the advert went well because it was upbeat and it had a happy tone, and the song is well known because it was in Matilda and it was quite catchy so this made the advert memorable. We thought that our voice over guy brain, a media teacher at college was suitable because we felt that a tortoise needed a older male voice compare to someone young which we originally used because we feel like it suited the character more to use an older voice and appeal more to the adult audience.

We manage our time quite well because we only had one location so we could work fast and focus more on the editing. Things that affected our time management were working with the tortoise as it was un cooperative at times and we could only film when Joe was available as he was the ownerOverall we worked well as a group because we put ourselves together and we could work comfortably together because we didn't feel like we couldn't give our opinions. We shared the tasks out fairly and to each others strengths. With the filming we wanted to get started straight away because we were working with an animal so if anything wasn't working out we has time to fix it or change our idea. We had to film around our timetables and around when tommy was available and we had to takes these things into consideration we got it done quite fast and had plenty of time to re-shoot whenever we wanted.

We took inspiration from the previous barclays advert which had a talking hamster in it. This helped us with our idea because barclays have used animals before so our advert was more relevant to barclays. Our final advert was successful because it turned out to be what we initially planned to do and stuck to our idea apart from we added in the chromakeying to tie in tommy's voice with what you could see.

Video Commentary

I certify that this is my work
